There are quite a few ways a blogger or webmaster can make money from a website, the most popular being AdSense. This is because of ease of implementation and its effectiveness as a revenue source. This article will look at what AdSense is and a few important features.

What is AdSense?

This is a program that puts relevant advertisements on a webpage by inserting HTML code into the site. A webmaster has to sign up for the program in order to get the code, the ads and the revenue. When a webmaster signs up, they become a part of Google's display network where advertisers can run ads from AdWords. For instance, if the website is about pet food, an advertiser can choose to run ads about pet food on the display network in the AdWords platform and they will automatically appear in all blogs and websites that talk about pet food. Developing high quality content in order to attract visitors to the site. This content can be written, video, audio etc.

Link building - Where a webmaster looks for links from high traffic sites so as to get more referred traffic etc.

AdSense is a very good way for beginners to start generating revenue on the internet because they can only concentrate on the most important aspects i.e. getting high quality traffic.

Types

Some of the types of AdSense that a webmaster can integrate into websites include:

Feeds - This is where a webmaster can put ads to RSS feeds. A webmaster has to have at least 100 unique subscribers and the content must be completely unique.

Mobile - This is where ads are run on mobile websites. The ads, code and landing pages are optimized for the mobile web in order to maximize earnings.

Video - This are the ads seen in video content e.g. on YouTube. This allows a video advertiser to generate income from content created. A video advertiser has to have a minimum number of views per video in order to qualify for this type of AdSense.

Domains - This is where a webmaster can place ads on domains being developed or not being used. This type is a good substitute for 'page not found' error messages. Only domains that follow Google's advertising policies are eligible for this type of AdSense.

Search - This type allows webmasters to generate revenue from Google custom search boxes on websites.

In a nutshell, a webmaster looking for the easiest ways to monetize a website should go for AdSense before trying more complicated methods.

If you run a website and are looking to make a long term income from it then Google AdSense is one of the best things that you can put on it.

But getting an AdSense account can be very troublesome for a lot of people, indeed in some countries such as India and China your website must have been up and running for at least six months, and sadly if you live in one of those countries there is no way around this time limit.

This means if you live there and apply for an AdSense account before your site has been running for six months then your application will be turned down, and sometimes this time limit will not be stated as the reason why, the response will most likely be an email stating that your site does not comply with AdSense policies - In reality this email is correct, as the onus is on you to make sure that your site complies for your countries policy, and in the case of India and China this means it has to have been running for six months.

So before applying for an account make sure you have read the guidelines on applying, they are there for a reason so read them. Fail to read them or follow them and you will get turned down, which just leads to you getting annoyed or frustrated thinking the AdSense application team are being awkward, when the reality of it is that it is down to you simply not reading and observing them.

So read the guidelines and the Terms Of Service (TOS), and make sure you follow them before applying to the program.

Very careful attention needs to be paid to the TOS as if you also fail to observe them then your application will get turned down at the first hurdle. As an example many people fail to note that every site needs to have a privacy policy to comply with Google TOS, so if your site has not got one, and a link to it from every page on your site then expect your application to fail.

Of note that the TOS and the website compliance guidelines apply to all of your sites, and whilst you are free to use AdSense on other sites when your account has been approved, failure to observe the TOS and the guidelines on your other sites is likely to result in an AdSense ban.

Google AdSense is absolutely indispensable for your websites. To understand this claim, you have to understand how AdSense works with your website.

When you sign up for AdSense, you are giving some Javascript code which you paste into your website. If you are blogging on the Wordpress platform, there are many plugins that will allow you just to enter your AdSense affiliate code, and it will place your AdSense code on all of your pages, and handle the advertisements that are shown on your site. The neat trick is that AdSense targets the ads by examining the content of your site, so when a surfer visits they will see advertisements for products that are immediately relevant to them. Because if advertisers find the AdSense publishing network indispensable, they are more likely to increase the amount of revenue that they pay for traffic.
